Synology aims new DiskStation at shutterbugs

Photography's shift from stacks of fragile negatives to gigabytes of image files has pushed a new category of users into the storage space -- and Synology is marketing its newest DiskStation network-attached storage (NAS) device to photogs looking to store reams of picture data.

Designed for the SMB market, the company's DiskStation DS2413+ is a 12-bay NAS device that can handle as much as 48 TB of storage. In addition it's equipped with an Intel Dual Core 2.13 GHz processor, up to 4 GB of double data rate type three, or DDR3, RAM; a pair of Gigabit Ethernet ports; plus two USB 3.0 ports and four USB 2.0 ports.

The device offers 201.03 megabytes-per-second reads (in a RAID 5 Windows configuration) and 196.87 MBps writes, is compliant with VMware Inc., Citrix Systems Inc. and Microsoft Hyper-V, according to Synology, and relies on the Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) 4.1 software. The unit is compatible with Windows and Mac backups.

The company said the DS2413+ can be expanded with the DX1211, which adds 12 drive bays and creates a NAS setup with up to 96 terabytes of storage.

The DSM software includes a media server option to allow streaming videos, music and photos to televisions and media players certified by Digital Living Network Appliance standards; and photo sharing (the device comes with an online album and automatic photo uploads to social media sites).

The company did not announce pricing, but online retailers listed prices for the DS2413+ starting at $1,699, and for the DX1211 starting at $1,256.

Paragon releases newest Drive Copy backup product

Paragon Software Group announced the latest version of its backup software product, Drive Copy 12 Professional, which the company says can migrate Windows operating systems to any physical drive or virtual environment.

Drive Copy 12 Professional is capable of migrating a virtual system from one virtual environment to another, or migrating a virtual system to a physical environment, according to the company. The product is also able to move the Windows XP, Vista, version 7 or version 8 OSes from a hard disk to a solid-state drive, even if the SSD has a smaller capacity, due to Drive Copy's "data exclusion" abilities, Paragon said.

The software is also able to move an OS to new hardware and the OS will be able to boot on the new equipment, according to Paragon.

The software retails at $39.95 and is available for download from the Paragon website, the company said.
