backup software.

Precision IT launches VaultIT

Precision IT recently announced a disaster recovery (DR) and cloud backup service aimed at small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) called VaultIT, which the company said is intended to help smaller organizations deal with the potentially complex issues surrounding DR and the cloud.

Precision IT said it relies on Asigra Cloud Backup software for its service. The company's recovery point objective is 24 hours, includes testing for an organization's replication setup and is conducted twice a year, according to Precision IT.

VaultIT called its service "agentless" backup -- the agent isn't installed on every PC and server, just the machine intended for the backup process. The company said the "best practice" for its service is for users to copy data to the server being backed up by VaultIT, instead of backing up users' individual machines. VaultIT's data centers are located in Virginia and New Jersey, the company said.

The service's DR function allows registered users to access a cloud version of a customer's backed up server through a secure Web interface. Data recovery is performed by VaultIT shipping a CD, DVD, tape, HDD or USB drive containing a customer's data back to the customer.

New NAS from Synology

Synology said its new DiskStation DS1513+ network-attached storage (NAS) device is aimed at SMBs looking to save space and combine several IT operations into a single unit.

The DS1513+ offers 202.34 MB per second writes and 350.94 MB per second reads in a RAID 5 configuration in a Windows environment, and scales up to 60 TB of storage with the addition of the Synology DX513 expansion product, Synology said. The DS1513+ can be equipped with up to 4 GB of RAM and has four LAN ports. The product also supports VMware, Citrix and Microsoft Hyper-V.

The company says the DS1513+ can also serve as a centralized backup target, using either Synology's own Data Replicator or Apple's Time Machine software. The NAS also has the option to backup data to cloud services such as Amazon's S3 or Glacier, as well as STRATO HiDrive.

According to Synology, the DS1513+ can replace separate pieces of hardware and combine an organization's mail server, VPN server, Web server, antivirus and other functions into a single box.

Google increases Apps storage capacity

Along with news that Google increased the shared storage space for its Google Drive, Gmail and Google+ Photos services for consumers, the search giant also announced a separate storage capacity increase for its Google Apps business customers.

According to Google, users of the company's Google Apps products will receive 30 GB of storage shared among Gmail and Drive. The company said the shared storage between its services will allow customers to allocate the storage as they see fit.

Previously, the company offered Apps service starting at $50 per user per year (or $5 per user per month), and Gmail had a 25 GB storage limit. Under that pricing, Google Drive had a 5 GB limit, although Google had options to purchase additional storage for Drive.

Users of the company's free services received a storage bump up to 15 GB, the company also said. Both storage increases will be rolled out over the next few weeks, according to Google.
