Tandberg Data and Yosemite Technologies Inc. have combined on a software application to provide CDP and bare-metal restore for backup and disaster recovery of RDX removable disk systems.

The product will be available next month as RDX FileKeeper, packaged with Tandberg's RDX QuikStor removable disk product for small and medium-sized businesses (SMB). RDX FileKeeper is a custom version of Yosemite's FileKeeper continuous data protection (CDP) product for PCs with bare-metal restore added to back up and restore all system and application data on an RDX disk.

McClain Buggle, Tandberg disk product manager, said the Tandberg version can take snapshots of full systems for disaster recovery and works with up to five cartridges and one disk target. RDX FileKeeper can be configured for system backup, CDP backup of user files, or both.

"It's designed for protecting a single server, and managing backup and archive, which is critical for a removable device," Buggle said.

RDX FileKeeper is bundled at no cost with RDX QuikStor drives. Tandberg has included Backup Exec Quickstart – Symantec's backup software application for single servers – with QuikStor. But, Buggle said Tandberg wanted a backup application designed specifically for disk. About a year ago Tandberg began working with Yosemite on RDX FileKeeper.

"We needed a partner willing to change the product and design it for our technology," Buggle said. "Yosemite is willing to do that."

Users who accidentally delete a file can find and restore a good version of the file through the RDX FileKeeper control panel. They can also go back to previous versions of a file. For full system recovery, RDX FileKeeper can boot off the QuikStor and perform bare-metal recovery on Windows 2008 and Vista. Users can create a boot CD for other Windows versions.

Tandberg is looking to expand its disk product line to try and reverse its financial situation after losing $15.3 million in the first half of this year. Tape slipped from 46.4% of Tandberg's business in the first half of 2007 to 41.8% in the first half of 2008, while disk increased from 8% to 16.7%.

Buggle sees the RDX target market as organizations with fewer than 20 users who have one file server with all of its critical application and user data.

RDX FileKeeper is a way for Tandberg to differentiate itself from major vendors, such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard, which also sell RDX removable products based on technology from ProStor Systems.

Forrester Research analyst Stephanie Balaouras said the lines between backup and CDP are blurring with CDP becoming a common feature in backup applications. She said the RDX FileKeeper application is a good fit for remote workers who need an immediate restore of files and for smaller companies when they require full system recovery.

"Remote workers and [others] who need a local backup aren't always tethered to the corporate network," she said. "The local disk appliance is nice because you have instant restore of deleted files or restore of the entire image. And, an online backup service, which I like but doesn't work for all scenarios, would need 24 hours recovery for larger data sets and doesn't provide system restore."

Yosemite acquired CDP startup FileKeeper in Jan. of 2007. Yosemite also sells FileKeeper through OEM deals with Dell, HP and Trend Micro, but Tandberg is the first partner that helped develop a custom version of the product.

Yosemite will offer FileKeeper modules for Microsoft SQL and Exchange through all of its partners next month, starting at $189 per module.
