Synology launches new DS409 for SMBs

The following is a compilation of the latest SMB data storage technology news.

Synology launches new DS409 for SMBs

Synology America Corp. launched the DS409, a new four-bay disk station that is designed to fill the need of SMBs that are looking for an easier and more affordable way to manage file management and data backup.

The DS409 is equipped with 1.2 GHz CPU, 256 MB DDRII RM, one Gigabit LAN port, two USB2.0 ports and one eSATA port. The DS409 supports up to 2 TB hard drives, enabling up to 8 TB of storage capacity with RAID 0 or JBOD configurations. The cableless design of the DS409 aims to deliver hassle-free installation and enhances system reliability and stability.

The Disk Station Manager 2.1 software provides cross platform data sharing, Windows ADS integration, sophisticated FTP server, business mail server and corporate surveillance. The DS409 is available now in the United States.

D-Link unveils new power-saving 8-port switch

D-Link introduced the second-generation 8-port gigabit desktop switch DGS-2208, which provides up to 84% reduced power consumption.

Shipping now, the DGS-2208 is one of four environmentally friendly SOHO/SMB gigabit switches that will ship this year with newly enhanced power-saving features, including a power supply that is Energy Star-compliant.

D-Link Green technology conserves energy by recognizing when a port is active or inactive then adjusts its power accordingly, benefiting SOHO/SMB users who may not need perpetual use of their computers or the use of all the ports on their switches. It is also capable of altering power usage in relation to the length of its cable, conserving energy use for both the user and the environment.

Dynamic Solutions International introduces version 2.1 of its DSI9000 virtual tape appliance family

Dynamic Solutions International (DSI) announced the availability of its next-generation virtual tape library (VTL) offerings for data backup and recovery, the DSI9000 version 2.1. The release of the new family of virtual tape library systems aims to offers a more streamlined data backup process to ensure data security and recovery.

The DSI9000 VTL series version 2.1 is aimed at SMBs and enterprise-class businesses, and users considering either iSCSI/IP or Fibre Channel (FC). DSI's version 2.1 DSI9000 VTL allows a user to copy directly to backend tape and optional features that provide data deduplication, encryption and replication functionality.

In addition, DSI has added two new appliances to the VTL family, the DSI9682 and the DSI9882. Both products are scalable for applications which range from mid-level to high-end implementations and can scale from 24 TB to 96 TB, with support for 64,000 virtual cartridges. Emulating a variety of drives and libraries, the systems employ RAID data protection, 4 Gb Fibre Channel and iSCSI, GUI management and partitioning.

Rebit partners with Seagate for PC data backup and recovery

Rebit Inc. announced a global OEM relationship with Seagate. Seagate's Replica PC backup appliance combines Rebit software with Seagate data storage and backup to deliver a consumer/SMB device for PC data backup and recovery.

Unlike most backup utilities, the new Seagate Replica backup appliance is a complete PC backup system, which automatically and continuously stores up-to-date copies of everything on a PC, including installed applications, operating system, email, pictures, Internet bookmarks, etc. Available in two configurations, the Seagate Replica can back up a single PC or multiple PCs.

Rmsource opens private cloud data center for SMBs

Rmsource has announced a new data center and expansion to its private cloud computing and Software-as-a-Service products. The data center will open in Q4 2009 and be located in Durham, North Carolina.

Services at the new Tier 3 facility will include Rmsource private clouds, Software-as-a-Service, Voice-over-IP/unified messaging, disaster recovery site hosting, and managed application servers. The facility also is SAS 70 Type II Certified, is a hurricane-rated facility and offers redundant cooling systems.
