C2C is bringing out a version of its Archive One email archiving and compliance product for SMBs and adding the ability to use the cloud for disaster recovery.

Archive One Express brings most of the features of C2C's flagship Archive One Enterprise product to smaller organizations, and Archive One CloudDR will let users connect to cloud services through the Internet. Both products will go into beta testing next month.

C2C CEO Dave Hunt said the vendor is broadening its offerings because email archiving and compliance isn't only required for large organizations who want to implement it as on-premise software.

"We've been selling to smaller customers, but they don't need all the features in Archive One," Hunt said. "We're trying to simplify it and make it more usable for companies with less than 200 users."

While Archive One Enterprise scales to tens of thousands of mailboxes and supports Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint, Windows File Server, and IBM Lotus Domino, Archive One Express scales to 200 users and only supports Microsoft Exchange. Archive One Express offers fewer archiving policy options -- it archives based on age and quota -- and defaults to one volume for archiving per year compared to support for multiple volumes and repositories on the enterprise product.

Archive One Express supports most of the enterprise version's search capabilities for e-discovery with the exception of proximity word searching. The SMB version also comes with a configuration wizard that Hunt said lets customers get up and running in 15 minutes.

Archive One Express pricing starts at $40 per mailbox. The enterprise product is priced at $25 per mailbox for organizations with 10,000 seats, but the price per seat increases to $60 per mailbox for 200 or less seats.

SMBs have same data storage and backup needs as enterprises

Enterprise Strategy Group senior analyst Brian Babineau said C2C understands the archiving and compliance needs of smaller companies.

"SMBs have the same storage and backup challenges that enterprises do, it's just their capacities are smaller," Babineau said. "When we talk to archive customers, their biggest issues are defining what their criteria will be for archiving and what the retention policies should be. C2C addresses those issues plus simplifies the installation."

Archive One CloudDR gives customers the option of backing up to a cloud service for disaster recovery. Hunt said Microsoft and Nirvanix will likely be the only partners during beta testing, but he claimed the cloud option will also work with Amazon S3 and Iron Mountain's cloud service.

Other vendors also see cloud integration as an archiving option. U.K. startup Tarmin Technologies last week added the ability to integrate its GridBank archiving product with Nirvanix's cloud.

Babineau said the cloud will be used in archiving in two ways -- as a Software as a Service model where providers save archived data, and as a storage tier to support the archive. C2C is using the second model. "The tier may be used for DR or simply to save old archived messages whereas new archived content remains on premise," he said.

Hunt said C2C will expand its channel with Archive One Express, and sell it through system integrators. Babineau said its channel buildup could be the biggest issue for C2C as it tries to make its way in a crowded archiving vendor space.

"C2C's biggest issue is lack of market awareness and distribution," he said. "They are fighting some big brand names in the market every day, like EMC, IBM, Symantec, and well-funded startups like Mimosa. So they need to step up the awareness and sales activities."
